A Flavour of the House

The kitchen block, to the right of the picture (left), with its outbuildings, built in the early 17th century, was originally detached with a basic single storey structure linking it with the main house, as the photograph from 1882 clearly shows.

The Exterior
The original part of the house was begun around 1605 and, over the centuries, has been extended and remodelled by successive generations. Luckily, the structure has not become degraded by subsequent additions. In fact, the last major changes were carried out as late as 1913.

However, it is the imposing silhouette of the four groups of tall diamond-plan chimney stacks rising above a steeply pitched and gabled roofline that makes the house so distinctive and special.

Towards the end of the 17th century the house was extended to form a half “H” on the south side. By around 1720 the main entrance was moved to the centre of this south elevation (left), only to be changed back to the east a hundred or so years later.
